Getting braces is an exciting step, but it also comes with a very normal question from kids and parents: What can I eat now?
The good news is that most children can still enjoy a wide variety of foods with braces. The biggest changes are choosing softer foods at first, cutting food into smaller pieces, and avoiding anything that can bend wires, loosen brackets, or get stuck around the braces.
At Welltide Orthodontics, we want families to feel prepared before the first day with braces arrives. A little planning can make the first week much smoother.
The First Few Days: Keep It Soft
It is common for teeth to feel sore for a few days after braces are placed or adjusted. During that time, soft foods are usually the easiest choice.
Good first-week options include:
- Yogurt
- Smoothies
- Scrambled eggs
- Macaroni and cheese
- Pasta
- Mashed potatoes
- Soup
- Soft rice
- Applesauce
- Oatmeal
- Pancakes
- Soft fish
- Tender chicken cut into small pieces
Cold foods can also feel soothing. Smoothies, yogurt, and soft chilled foods may help when teeth feel tender.
Foods To Avoid With Braces
Some foods are more likely to damage braces. These are usually foods that are very hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy.
Try to avoid:
- Popcorn
- Sticky candy
- Caramels
- Gum
- Hard pretzels
- Nuts
- Ice chewing
- Hard taco shells
- Corn chips
- Whole apples
- Whole raw carrots
- Corn on the cob
This does not mean every crunchy food is off limits forever. Some foods can be modified. For example, apples can be sliced thin, carrots can be cooked or cut into small pieces, and corn can be removed from the cob.
Easy School Lunch Ideas
School lunches can be tricky during the first week with braces, especially if a child is still getting used to chewing.
Braces-friendly lunch ideas include:
- Pasta salad with soft noodles
- Soft sandwich bread with thinly sliced fillings
- Yogurt with soft fruit
- Soup in a thermos
- Cheese sticks
- Soft muffins
- Rice bowls
- Scrambled egg wraps
- Banana slices
- Applesauce pouches
It can also help to pack a small braces care kit with a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss picks or threaders if recommended, orthodontic wax, and a small mirror.
What About Snacks?
Snacks are still possible with braces. The goal is to choose options that are gentle on brackets and wires.
Braces-friendly snacks may include:
- Bananas
- Soft granola bars without hard nuts
- Cheese
- Yogurt
- Smoothies
- Soft crackers
- Hummus with soft pita
- Applesauce
- Pudding
- Soft baked goods
Kids should be careful with hard or sticky snacks, especially during school, sports, or travel when brushing may not be easy right away.
How To Make Favorite Foods Safer
Many favorite foods can still work with small changes.
Instead of biting directly into foods with the front teeth, cut them into smaller pieces and chew gently with the back teeth. This is especially helpful for foods like sandwiches, pizza, fruit, and cooked vegetables.
Families can also keep a few soft meals ready at home after appointments. Having easy options available can reduce stress when a child is hungry but sore.
When To Call The Orthodontist
Occasional soreness is normal, especially at the beginning. But families should reach out if a bracket feels loose, a wire is poking, or something breaks while eating.
Orthodontic wax can help with minor irritation, but it is not meant to fix a broken appliance. If something feels sharp, loose, or uncomfortable, it is best to check in with the orthodontic team.
A Good First Week Builds Confidence
The first week with braces is an adjustment, but it gets easier quickly. With soft foods, simple routines, and a little patience, most kids settle in faster than they expect.
Welltide Orthodontics is preparing to welcome families in Palencia, St. Augustine, and the surrounding St. Johns County communities. Our goal is to make every step of orthodontic care feel clear, supportive, and manageable for kids, teens, and parents.
